Melgaço Hosts the 2025 UEC European Mountain Bike Championships

The municipality of Melgaço, known for its stunning natural landscapes and excellent cycling trails, has been chosen to host the prestigious 2025 UEC European Mountain Bike Championships. Organized by the European Cycling Union (UEC), this landmark event in the European MTB scene will take place from July 23rd to 27th, bringing together the elite mountain bikers from across the continent.

The choice of Melgaço to host the 2025 UEC European Mountain Bike Championships was no coincidence. The municipality has established itself as an excellent destination for nature and adventure sports, thanks to a continuous focus on developing quality sports infrastructure and enhancing the region. Nestled within the stunning landscape of the Peneda-Gerês National Park, Melgaço offers technical, demanding trails perfectly integrated into the environment, providing unique conditions for Olympic Cross-Country (XCO)and MTB, the featured disciplines of this edition. The race will feature Elite, U23,and Junior categories, with athletes from dozens of countries competing for the coveted European titles.

The UEC (Union Européenne de Cyclisme), the governing body of European cycling, is once again committed to promoting the development and visibility of various cycling disciplines. Holding the European MTB Championships in Portugal, and in particular in Melgaço, reinforces the UEC’s strategic role in decentralizing major events and promoting areas with strong ties to outdoor sports.

The 2025 UEC MTB European Championships will be much more than a competition: it will be a true cycling celebration, with sporting, tourism, and economic impact for the region. For five days, Melgaço will welcome hundreds of athletes, technical committees, official representatives, and thousands of visitors in a vibrant atmosphere celebrating the sport.

By car, it’s about 160 km from Porto, mostly on the highway.

If a car isn’t an option, there are some bus options:

  • Auto Viação do Minho has an express bus from Porto, which runs through Viana do Castelo or Ponte de Lima.
  • AVIC has regular services connecting Melgaço and Castro Laboreiro to Monção and Viana do Castelo.
  • Internorte and Anpian have international routes to/from Spain and France.

The closest airport to Melgaço is Vigo Airport (VGO), which is 33.2 km away.

  • Women Elite (WE)
  • Men Elite (ME) categories.

Age categories for which the individual title of the European Champion will be awarded are the following:

  • Men Elitefor XCO / XCC /XCR (aged 23 and over)
  • Men U23for XCO / XCR (aged 19 to 22)
  • Women Elite for XCO / XCC /XCR (aged 23 and over)
  • Women U23 for XCO / XCR (aged 19 to 22)
  • Men Junior for XCO / XCC /XCR (aged 17 and 18)
  • Women Junior for XCO / XCC /XCR (aged 17 and 18)
